The Canton Warrioor football team ground out 375 yards rushing Saturday afternoon to dump visiting Wellsboro 47-6. The loss drops Wellsboro to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in Twin Tiers League action.

Rod Smith opened the Canton scoring with a one yard run in the first period to put the Warriors on top 6-0. In the second period the roof fell in on Wellsboro as Canton scored 20 points while limiting the Hornets to six.

Lorne Day opened the onslaught as he ran 25 yards to a touchdown early in the quarter. Kip Bentley upped the Warrior edge to 19-0 on a one yard plunge.

The lone bright spot of the day for Wellsboro occurred on the ensuing kickoff. Return man Bob Bowers took the kick on his own 10-yard line and scooted 90 yards for the lone Hornet points of the day. Canton stormed right back, however, to take a 26-6 lead on a 25 yard pass from quarterback Scott Holmes to Smith.

The second half was all Canton as they added three more touchdowns, one in the third period, and two in the fourth.

Holmes found Chris Gerould on a 29 yard touchdown aerial in the third period, while Devon Perry and Matt Harold scored on runs of 13 and 17 yards respectively in the final stanza. The Warriors amassed 491 total yards compared with 132 for Wellsboro. Hornet quarterbacks suffered four interceptions.

Hornet head coach Jeff Strohl summed up the loss this way, "The pitch portion of their (Canton's) offense gave us real problems. We seem to be able to shut down most of our opponents running attacks, with that exception."

On the bright side, Strohl noted that Tim Driebelbies ran the ball well again this week. Driebelbles was the loading rusher for Wellsboro with 58 yards on eight tries.

"Along the offensive front John Hopkins and Dan Reese also played well," Strohl continued.

Defensively Gary Cooper was the workhorse as he recorded a game high 13 tackles for the Hornets. Tom Reese, Nick Wallace, and Dave Quackenbush also had good defensive performances.

This week's cheerleaders player of the week was Bob Bowers.

Saturday, Wellsboro travels to Blossburg to take on North Penn in a 2:00 p.m. game.

The Hornet JV's lost 14-8 this week to drop their record to 2-3 on the year. Perry Prough scored Wellsboro's lone touchdown.
