Three long touchdowns early in the game led the Sayre Redskins to a 29-6 football win over visiting Wellsboro Saturday night. The win improved Sayre's record to 1-1 while Wellsboro dropped to 0-2.
Sayre opened the scoring on their initial possession when Brian Simonovich scampered 50 yards on a reverse. Mike Stevens' kick put the Redskins in front 7-0. On their next possession, Bob Bidlack took a handoff and ran up the middle 43 yards for another touchdown. Stevens' kick increased the Sayre lead to 14-0.
The only score in the second period came on the very first play when quarterback Chris VanVliet hit split end Tom Shay with a 73 yard scoring strike to up Sayre's advantage to 21-0. The half ended with Wellsboro trailing by three touchdowns.
After a VanVliet touchdown pass to Tony Esposito and a safety made the count 29-0, Wellsboro scored their lone points of the evening. T.J. Layton ran 86 yards on a sweep right to put the Hornets on the board. The kick failed and the game ended, 29-6.
Wellsboro head coach Jeff Strohl summed up the contest this way, "The offensive line did a good job in making holes, but the backs were very slow getting to them. Dan Reese, Jeff Moss, John Hopkins, and Marty Hennernan all did exceptional work on the line. If the backs could have hit the holes quicker, we would have rolled up the yardage," Strohl said.
"On the defensive side, we played well at times, but very poorly at others," Strohl added. "Matt Mitchell, Reese, Moss, and Hopkins played very aggressively along the front, but not consistently enough to keep us in the ball game."
T.J. Layton led the Hornet rushers with 136 yards on 18 carries. Moss, Hopkins, and Tom Reese led Wellsboro tacklers with five apiece.
The Hornet cheerleaders' player of the game this week was T.J. Layton.
The Wellsboro JV's raised their record to 2-0 with a 6-0 victory over Sayre Saturday morning. Tim Driebelbies scored the lone touchdown when he ran five yards off tackle. The defense played tough in the second half to secure the win.
