The Waverly Wolverine football team scored on their second play from scrimmage enroute to a 48-7 thrashing of Wellsboro Friday night. The loss dropped Wellsboro's record to 1-4 on the year.
The visitors scored first when junior tailback Sam Goble sprinted 60 yards around right end for a score. On their second possession, Waverly scored again, this time on a 42 yard flanker reverse by Mike Rapp.
The Wolverine defense got into the act next when safety Jeff Mattison stepped in front of a Tomm Wallace pass and sped 35 yards for Waverly's third touchdown of the first quarter.
The second stanza was a carbon copy of the first for Waverly's offense. Goble, the TTL's leading rusher, ripped the Hornet defense again for a score, while Rapp's 47 yard run set up a 22 yard touchdown strike from quarterback Chris Robbins to his fullback.
The Hornets lone score came late in the second period Nick Wallace capped an impressive 65 yard drive with a one yard touchdown run. T.J. Layton was the workhorse for the Hornets on the drive, as he carried the ball six times for 35 yards. Marty Henneman kicked the extra point, and the half ended with Waverly on top, 35-7.
The second half saw subs get into the action for both sides. Waverly did manage two more scores to bring the final count to 48-7.
A bright spot for the Hornets was the running of sophomore tailback Tim Driebelbies. Driebelbies rushed for 80 yards on 11 carries and ended the game as Wellsboro's leading ground gainer.
The cheerleaders player of the week was Nick Wallace.
The Junior Varsity saw action on Thursday evening against Waverly, losing a close, well played game, 14-12. Steve Worden picked up a fumble and ran it in for a score while Perry Prough scored the other points. The loss evened the Hornets' JV record at 2-2.
