The Sayre Redskins football team scored all 12 of their points in the second quarter then held on to defeat Wellsboro 12-6 in the Hornets home opener Friday night.

The Sayre win puts their Northern Tier League record at 1-0. Wellsboro fell to 1-1 after an opening week win over Towanda.

After a scoreless fiist period, Sayre tailback Butch Gonzales scored on a one yard run to put the Redskins on top 6-0. Later in the quarter, Redskin quarterback Dave Sargeant found Joe Mint in the end zone for a three yard touchdown pass to put Sayre ahead to stay 12-0.

The Hornets only score came in the third period. Tailback Tim Driebelbies went the final 15 yards but the point after failed. Driebelbies led Wellsboro rushers with 60 yards on 18 carries.

Hornet head coach Jeff Strohl was pleased with the play of his defense, especially throughout the second half.

"After making some halftime adjustments, the defense played well," Strohl commented. "John Hopkins, Dan Reese, Dave Bryant, Marty Henneman, and Rick Layton all played solid defensive games."

Hopkins led the Wellsboro defense with 15 tackles.

Wellsboro was also hurt by the loss of quarterback Perry Prough (thigh injury) late in the second quarter.

"That loss hurt us," Strohl said. "Eric Olshevski stepped in for Prough and did a great job in his first varsity action at quarterback. Prough's injury however limited us in the number of plays we could run effectively."

On a brighter note, Strohl said he was impressed with the punting team which keyed Wellsboro's lone score.

"Every player executed his block allowing us to return the punt 35 yards and set up our touchdown."

This Saturday, September 15, Wellsboro travels lo Wellsville, New York for a 2:00 p.m. non-league contest.
