The Wellsboro Hornet football team ground out 411 yards in total offense to beat Cowanesque Valley 34-7 Friday night in a non-league contest at Wellsboro.

The win improving Wellsboro's record to 3-2 (1-2 in Northern Tier League play). The Indians fall to 1-4.

Tim Driebelbies got the Hornets on the board first when he scored on a nine yard run in the first period. Driebelbies, the Hornets' junior tailback, finished the night with 124 yards on 22 carries.

Cowanesque Valley knotted the score at 7-7 early in the second quarter on a three yard run by Dan Wood.

From that point on, however, it was all Wellsboro. A 36 yard pass from quarterback Perry Prough to Bob Bowers and a three yard toss from Prough to tight end Marty Henneman put the Hornets ahead 21-7 at the half.

Prough hooked up with Bowers again in the third stanza, this time on a 74 yard touchdown pass. Split end Bowers had a total of 122 yards on three receptions, two for touchdowns.

The only scoring in the fourth period came on a four yard run by quarterback Prough.

Jeff Strohl, Wellsboro head coach, was pleased with his team's defensive play.

"We had a slow start defensively, giving up 90 yards in two drives, but after that we played well and shut them down," Strohl noted.

"Marty Henneman played a real fine defensive game, notching 10 tackles and recording two sacks," Strohl added.

Dave Bryant also had 10 tackles for the Hornets.

This Friday night, Wellsboro travels to Waverly, N.Y. for a 7:30 p.m. game. Cowanesque Valley goes to Bishop Walsh Friday night for an 8:00 p.m. game.
