Sam Goble and Pat Bonning ran for five touchdowns Friday night to lead Waverly to a 35-13 Northern Tier League football win over visiting Wellsboro. The Hornets fall to 1-3 in NTL play and 3-3 overall.
Bonning put the Wolverines on the scoreboard first as he dashed in from two yards out. Goble's four yard run and a successful Bonning two-point conversion run made the score 14-0 after one period.
Hornet fullback Dave Bryant bulled over from a yard out early in the second quarter. Marty Henneman's kick cut the Waverly lead to 14-7.
The Wolverines countered, however, on a six yard run by Goble and Bonning's extra point kick to take a 21-7 halftime lead.
Goble's 52 yard touchdown jaunt was the only score in the third stanza. Bonning's kick put Waverly up 28-7.
Bonning closed out the Waverly scoring as he scored on a four yard, fourth quarter run, then added the extra point.
Wellsboro tailback Tim Driebelbies broke loose and ran 47 yards for the Hornets' last score late in the final period.
For the Hornets, Driebelbies was top rusher with 89 yards on 17 carries.
Quarterback Perry Prough completed five of 13 passes for 76 yards. Bob Bowers hauled in four of the aerials for 63 yards. Rick Layton led the defense with 12 tackles.
Homecoming is next for the Hornets as they host the Canton Warriors this Friday night at 8:00 p.m. in an NTL battle.
