The Wellsboro Hornet football team trounced Wellsville 35-0, Saturday afternoon at Wellsville, N.Y. The non-league win improved the Hornets season record to 2-1, 1-1 in Northern Tier League play.

Wellsboro's defense held Wellsville to only 83 yards total offense, while the Hornets amassed 350 total yards, 258 of them on the ground.

Wellsboro put the game out of reach with 21 second quarter points to take a 28-0 halftime lead. Fullback George Dempsey bulled over from a yard out early in the period to put the Hornets ahead 14-0.

Flanker Bob Bowers scored on a 26 yard pass from junior quarterback Perry Prough and tailback Tim Driebelbies rushed from three yards for a third touchdown.

Fullback Dave Bryant had given Wellsboro a 7-0 edge in the first stanza when he scored on a 15 yard run.

Joe Paxson closed out the scoring after a scoreless third period when he hauled up an 18 yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Eric Olshevski.

Tight end/kicker Marty Henneman was a perfect five for five on extra point kicks.

The shutout victory was Wellsboro's first in three years.

Hornet head coach Jeff Strohl was pleased with the play of his squad, especially the offensive line and the fullbacks.

"Out offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage all day long," Strohl said. "Also our fullbacks, Dempsey and Bryant, rushed for a combined total of 107 yards. This allowed us to control the ball and take some of the rushing pressure off of tailback Tim Driebelbeies."

Driebelbies led Hornet rushers with 123 yards on 18 carries and scored one touchdown. Bowers led the receiving corps with three catches, good for 63 yards and one score.

John Hopkins led the defense with six tackles, while Bryant added a blocked punt and Olshevski and Rick Layton each interecepted Wellsville passes.

This Friday night the Hornets travel to Troy to take on the Trojans. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
