The Canton Warriors spotted Wellsboro an early 6-0 lead, then roared back to score 35 straight points and post a 35-14 Northern Tier League football win over the Hornets on Saturday at Canton.

The hero for the day was Warrior halfback Matt Buck. The senior back scored four touchdowns, three on offense and one on defense. He finished the afternoon with 75 yards rushing on 10 carries.

Meanwhile, the Hornets' main offensive threat, Tim Driebelbies, was held to 68 yards on 13 totes. Driebelbies has now rushed for 780 yards on 122 carries for an average of 6.4 yards per attempt.

Wellsboro got on the scoreboard first when Kevin Cavanaugh took the opening kickoff on the Hornets' 10-yard line and scampered 90 yards to the Canton end zone. The two-point conversion run failed, and Wellsboro led 6-0.

Buck and Scott Holmes rallied the Warriors later in the opening quarter.

Buck scored on a three yard run, and Holmes found the end zone on a 16 yard reverse. Kicker Ed Chamberlin booted both extra points to give Canton a 14-6 edge. Both scores were set up by Hornet turnovers deep in their own territory.

A safety and Buck's second touchdown run put Canton on top 23-6 at intermission.

The Warriors' Dave Wilcox blocked a Wellsboro punt which rolled out of the end zone for a two pointer.

Buck's touchdown run capped a short, three-play, 56 yard drive highlighted by 30 and 24 yard passes from Wilcox to Larry Boyer and Mike Davison respectively.

The only score in the third stanza was another two yard touchdown run by Buck.

Both teams traded fourth period scores. Canton scored first when Buck recovered a fumble at Wellsboro's 20-yard line and ran it in for six. The Hornets retaliated with Driebelbies scoring on a 44 yard run as time was running down.

With the loss, Wellsboro drops to 0-4 in NTL play, 2-4 overall. Canton is now 3-1 in league play, 5-1 overall.

This week, the Hornets host Waverly in an NTL matchup scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening, October 11.
