The Wellsboro Hornet football team racked up 249 rushing yards en route to a 20-7 win over Cowanesque Valley Saturday night at Westfield. It marked the season opener for both squads.
Tailback Tim Driebelbies was the Hornets' main offensive weapon, churning out 183 yards on 25 carries for 7.3 per rush average. Driebelbies also scored all three of Wellsboro's touchdowns on runs of one, three, and 31 yards.
Driebelbies one yard run on the Hornets' first offensive series, followed by Perry Prough's extra point, gave Wellsboro an early 7-0 advantage.
The Indians tied the game early in the second stanza when Cowanesque quarterback Bob Potter found split end Steve Stanley alone in the end zone for a 10 yard touchdown toss. Mark Burfield's point after knotted the game at 7-7. Later in the quarter, Driebelbies went over from three yards out and Wellsboro led 13-7 at the half.
A 31 yard touchdown run by Driebelbies midway through the third quarter closed out the scoring. The touchdown run was set up by a 37 yard Driebelbies run several plays earlier. Rick Layton's extra point boot gave Wellsboro a 13 point, 20-7 edge.
Both teams were unable to muster much offense after the third quarter Wellsboro score.
The Hornets travel to Sayre Friday night to tackle the Redskins. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
