David Bryant and Butch Gonzalez combined for four first half touchdowns Friday night to pace Sayre to a 35-13 football victory over visiting Wellsboro. The game was the Northern Tier League opener for both teams. The loss dropped the Hornets' overall record to 1-1.
The Redskins wasted little time putting the game away as they scored touchdowns on each of their first four possessions. Bryant scored twice in the first quarter on runs of seven and five yards. Gonzalez matched Bryant in quarter number two, scampering 16 and 58 yards to paydirt. Glenn Carnnke booted all four extra points and Sayre led 28-0 by intermission.
A 19 yard John Brooks to Sam Jerome touchdown aerial and Carnnke's kick boosted the Sayre advantage to 35-0 early in the third stanza.
Wellsboro rallied later in the period on a 14 yard touchdown run by tailback Tim Driebelbies.
In the fourth quarter, Wellsboro quarterback Perry Prough hit John Davis with a 57 yard scoring strike.
Driebelbies carried the ball 19 times for 74 yards (3.9 yards per carry) to bring his two game total to 257 yards on 44 carries for a 5.8 per carry average.
This Friday, the Hornets host Wellsville at 8:00 p.m. It is the home opener for Wellsboro this year.
