Black Knights nip Wellsboro, 16-13.

A two yard touchdown run by Towanda's quarterback Bryan Perry with five minutes left in the game propelled the visiting Black Knights to a 16-13 over Wellsboro Friday night.

The homecoming loss dropped Wellsboro's record to 1-3 (0-3 in Northern Tier League play). Towanda is 4-1 overall and 3-0 in NTL action.

Wellsboro took a 7-0 lead in the first period on a four yard scoring run by tailback Tim Driebelbies.

That run culminated a 10 play 88 yard scoring march. Rick Layton added the extra point. Driebelbies and quarterback Eric Olshevski combined for 73 of the 88 yards gained on the drive.

Towanda took an 8-7 lead in the second stanza on a two yard touchdown run by Gordie Bull. The 38 yard scoring drive began when the Green Hornets lost a fumble. A successful two-point conversion toss from Perry to Damon Yonkin put the Black Knights up by one at intermission.

The Hornets did the only scoring of the third period. Driebelbies scampered 31 yards for a score as time was running out in the quarter. The drive was set up when Philip Prough intercepted a Towanda pass.

Wellsboro's defense managed to stifle any Black Knight scoring threats until midway through the final period. A Towanda fumble recovery on the Hornets 25-yard line began the winning march. Two third down pass completions from Perry to Jack Young kept the drive alive and Perry's two yard run spoiled the Wellsboro upset bid.

Driebelbies continued his fine running collecting 168 yards on 24 carries. The NTL's leading ball carrier has now rushed for 712 yards on 109 attempts an average of 6.5 yards per rush.

This week Wellsboro travels to Canton for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday versus the Warriors. The Hornets next home game is Friday night October 11 versus Waverly.
