The Wellsboro Hornet football team posted their first Northern Tier League victory of the season Friday night by downing visiting Waverly 15-8. The win puts the Hornet season record at 3-4 overall, 1-4 in NTL play. Waverly drops to 1-4 in the NTL, 1-5 overall.

Wellsboro quarterback Eric Olshevski headed the offensive show, rushing for 104 yards on 16 carries and completing seven of 13 passes including one touchdown.

The Hornets scored first, taking the opening kickoff and marching 73 yards on 10 plays. Tailback Tim Driebelbies capped the drive with a one yard scoring run. Rick Layton's extra point put Wellsboro ahead 7-0.

Wellsboro's defense then stiffened, stifling two Waverly second quarter drives inside the Hornet five-yard line. On the first Wolverine threat, quarterback Jason Miller was stopped on fourth down at the three-yard line. The second Waverly march ended with Dave Maloney being stopped on the Wellsboro one-yard line as the half expired.

The Wolverines did manage to take the lead, however, scoring a touchdown between the two stalled drives. Rick Sindoni scored from the two-yard line to cap a six play 35 yard march. A David DeKay two-point conversion run put Waverly on top 8-7 at intermission.

The deciding score came in the third quarter when the Hornets took control of the ball at their own five-yard line. Twelve plays and 95 yards later, Wellsboro scored on a 15 yard scoring strike from Olshevski to Eric Gee. Gee made a fine catch of the tipped Olshevski pass. Driebelbies then caught a pass from Olshevski for the successful two-point conversion.

The Waverly defense did hold Driebelbies to a season low 22 yards rushing on 19 attempts. Tim has now rushed for 802 yards on 141 carries this season.

On Saturday, October 19, Wellsboro travels to North Penn to take on the Panthers at 2:00 p.m. in a non-league tilt.
