The Wellsboro Hornets got two touchdown runs from tailback Tim Driebelbies to top Wyalusing 20-12 in a Northern Tier League football game played at Wyalusing Friday night. The win, Wellsboro's third in a row, lifts them to 5-4 overall 2-4 in NTL play Wyalusing is 1-5 in league play 2-6 overall.
The win marks the first time that Wellsboro has ever beaten the Rams at Wyalusing.
Driebelbies got the Hornets on the board first with a two yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Rick Layton's extra point boot gave Wellsboro a 7-0 advantage. Kevin Cavanaugh made several key receptions and runs to keep the scoring drive alive.
The Rams rallied to close the gap to 7-6 on a 15 yard run by Frank Repsher with just over a minute left in the first half. The point after try missed.
The Wellsboro lead increased to eight points, 14-6, when Hornet quarterback Eric Olshevski scored on a 22 yard run midway through the third quarter. Layton added the extra point.
Wyalusing again closed the gap early in the final stanza on a two yard touchdown run by Steve Lewis. The two-point conversion try failed and Wellsboro led 14-12.
With just under five minutes remaining, Driebelbies scored his second touchdown of the night, this one a five yard run. That touchdown ended the scoring but not the excitement.
Following the kickoff, the Hornets held Wyalusing on downs taking possession of the ball on their own 20-yard line with under two minutes left to play. Wellsboro lost the ball on a fumble however and the Rams took control of the ball on the Hornet 21-yard line.
The game ended with Scott Butler breaking up a Wyalusing fourth and nine pass attempt in the end zone.
Driebelbies finished the night with 105 yards on 22 carries. He has now gained over 1,000 yards on the season.
Defensively the Hornets played their toughest game of the season holding Wvalusing to only 167 yards of total offense. Wellsboro also played a fine ball control game by utilizing a strong rushing attack. To illustrate that fact, Wvalusing ran a total of only three plays the entire first quarter.
Wellsboro wraps up its season this Friday evening with a home game versus Athens at 8:00 p.m. It is also Parents' Night.
