Homecoming festivities were rained out but the Wellsboro offense really poured it on to post a 38-14 football win versus visiting Canton Friday night. The victory improves the Hornets overall record to 4-2, 3-2 in Twin Tiers League play. The Warriors fell to 2-4 overall, 1-3 in TTL action.
Kevin Cavanaugh and Bob Burnier sparked the offense.
Cavanaugh rushed for 145 yards on 19 carries. He scored two touchdowns and added four two-point conversion runs. Burnier caught both Wellsboro completions on the night, one for a 65 yard score.
Canton jumped out to an early 6-0 lead followed by the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0. The touchdown was a Tymeson pass to Wesneski.
Later in the period, Burnier caught his 65 yard scoring pass from Wellsboro quarterback Damon Scott. Cavanaugh's first two-point conversion run tied the score 8-8.
Scott's one yard touchdown run and Cavanaugh's second conversion run put Wellsboro ahead to stay 16-8 as the first half came to a close.
Mike Butters took the second half kickoff 87 yards for a Canton touchdown and the two-point conversion pass failed and the Hornets clung to a 16-14 lead.
Cavanaugh then took charge, carrying the next two Wellsboro touchdowns and adding both conversion runs. One run, a 57 yarder, came in the third period while his six yard jaunt came early in the fourth quarter to give the Hornets a comfortable 32-14 edge.
Scott's three yard run later in the quarter sealed the deal for the Hornets, giving them the league win.
