The Wellsboro Hornet football team got by Cowanesque Valley 18-13 Friday night in the non-league opener for both squads at Wellsboro High School.

Kevin Cavanaugh was the offensive spark for Wellsboro, rushing for 137 yards on 13 carries including a 62 yard touchdown run in the third period. He also caught two passes for 19 yards.

Tim Bowers was Cowanesque Valley's major offensive threat toting the ball 31 times and gaining 158 yards. Bowers scored on a three yard blast up the middle early in the final stanza.

The Indians got on the scoreboard first on a nine yard scoring pass from quarterback Kip Adams to Tim Dimon. Todd Neal's extra point put Cowanesque on top 7-0.

Wellsboro rallied to score 18 unanswered points, 12 before halftime.

Damon Scott scored on a one yard quarterback sneak to narrow the margin to 7-6. With time running out in the half Scott capped a four play, 65 yard drive with a 27 yard touchdown aerial to Eric Patterson to stake the Hornets to a 12-7 halflime edge.

Patterson was the game's leading receiver, hauling in two for 46 yards.

Cavanaugh's 62 yard scoring run late in the third period upped the Wellsboro advantage to 18-7, but Cowanesque refused to fold.

Bowers scored his touchdown early in the fourth stanza to cut the Hornet lead to five, 18-13. Then, late in the game with the Indians deep in Wellsboro territory, Bowers was ruled to have been stopped short on one carry then fumbled on his second attempt to thwart the threat. The Hornets then ran out the clock to preserve the win.

The Hornets host Wyalusing this Friday, September 5 beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the High School field.
