The Wellsboro Hornet football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a thrilling come from behind 28-22 win over the Montrose Meteors Saturday afternoon at Montrose.
The win improves Wellsboro's league record to 2-0.
The Hornets capitalized on big plays offensively as all four of their touchdowns covered more than 40 yards. The last one a 56 yard touchdown pass from Damon Scott to Phil Prough took place only 46 seconds after Montrose scored with only 1:17 left in the game to take a 22-20 lead.
Jim Pudish, Montrose tailback, scored all three Meteor touchdowns and added both of their successful two-point conversions. Pudish rushed for 185 yards on 34 carries in a losing effort.
Montrose scored first on a nine yard Pudish run in the opening stanza to take a 6-0 lead. The Hornets tied the score late in the period when Seth Yost took a pitch from Scott, headed for the right sideline and bolted 41 yards for a touchdown.
In the second period Wellsboro's Kevin Cavanaugh took a handoff from Scott at his own 20-yard line and rambled 80 yards for the Hornets second score. A Scott to Prough pass for the two-point conversion put Wellsboro on top 14-6.
Pudish tied the score at 14-14 just before halftime scoring on a 28 yard run and adding the conversion run.
Wellsboro drove deep into Meteor territory in the third quarter and had a first down at the Montrose 15-yard line. Following a penalty and a sack, Wellsboro faced a second-and-46 at their own 49-yard line. Scott then hit Prough down the right sideline on a perfect 51 yard touchdown pass to stake Wellsboro to a 20-14 lead.
That six point lead held up until late in the fourth period. The Meteors drove deep into Wellsboro territory with time becoming a factor. On a fourth-and-one from Wellsboro's one-yard line, Pudish banged over the right side for his third touchdown of the day with only 1:17 showing on the clock. Pudish also added a crucial two-point conversion run to give Montrose a 22-20 lead. Pudish scored all 22 meteor points.
The Hornets took the ensuing kickoff returning it to the 30-yard line. Two running plays netted a first down and moved the ball to the Wellsboro 44-yard line. Scott then lofted a bomb to Prough which he took from the defender and raced 56 yards for the winning score with only 51 seconds remaining. Scott hit Prough again for the two-point conversion.
Montrose had one last chance but a Scott Ingerick interception on the first play following the kickoff ended the threat and the game.
Prough caught five of Wellsboro's six completed passes for 179 yards for a 35.8 yards per catch average. Cavanaugh was the Hornets leading ground gainer churning out 150 yards on 14 carries (10.7 yard average).
Wellsboro's next challenge is this Friday night at 8:00 p.m. when the Hornets travel to Troy for an TTL contest. It is the Trojans' first league game.
