The Wellsboro Hornet football team improved its season record to 5-3 with a 32-8 homecoming win over North Penn Friday night. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-6.
Wellsboro jumped out to a 26-0 halftime edge, scoring two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters.
Kevin Cavanaugh, the game's leading rusher, scored first on a six yard run in the opening period. Jose Delberto's kick put the Hornets on top to stay, 7-0. Cavanaugh finished the night with 60 yards on 17 carries and one touchdown.
Quarterback Damon Scott's 11 yard scoring run later in the period increased the Wellsboro lead to 13-0.
Scott's two touchdown passes in the second stanza broke the game wide open by intermission. His three yard toss to Bob Burnier put the Hornets ahead 19-0, then a 32 yard strike to Cy Yost, combined with Delberto's point after boot, gave them a 26-0 halftime bulge. Two of Scott's three completions on the night were for touchdowns.
The last Hornet score came on a two yard keeper by Scott in the third quarter.
North Penn averted a shutout when Ty Heichel picked off a Wellsboro pass and ran 40 yards to paydirt late in the game.
The Panthers travel to Montgomery Friday night, October 24, while Wellsboro hosts the Sayre Redskins.
