One yard touchdown runs by Tony West and Pat Esposito were the difference Friday night as the Sayre Redskins defeated Wellsboro 14-11 in a see-saw battle at Wellsboro.

The loss drops the Hornets to 5-4 overall, 3-4 in Twin Tiers League play. Sayre is currently 5-3 overall, 4-2 in the TTL.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard first on a 29 yard Jose Delberto field goal in the second quarter.

Sayre rallied, however, to take an 8-3 lead in the third quarter. The Redskins scored on West's one yard run and added the two-point conversion on a Chris Politi to Gerald Ross pass.

Later in the third stanza, Wellsboro regained the lead on a touchdown pass from punt formatlon. Hornet punter Phil Prough took the snap and hit Kevin Cavanaugh with a short pass that wound up a 40 yard scoring play. The two-point conversion was successful as a tipped Damon Scott pass found its way into tackle Larry Brought's hands.

The winning score came in the fourth quarter with Esposito capping a Redskin drive by going into the end zone from a yard out. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Cavanaugh was Wellsboro's leading ground gainer, churning out 65 yards on 25 carries. Cavanaugh and Prough were also tops among receivers, Cavanaugh catching one for 40 yards and a touchdown, Prough hauling down three Scott passes for 38 yards.

The Hornets end their regular season this Friday night with a 7:30 p.m. game at Waverly, N.Y. Playoffs are set to begin shortly there after.
