Troy topples Hornets, 24-7.
| presented by: |
The Troy Trojans used a big play passing offense and combined that with four-interceptions of Wellsboro aerials to post a 24-7 homecoming football win over the Hornets Friday night. Troy, improves to 2-1 overall (1-0 in Twin Tiers League play). Wellsboro tasted defeat for the first time this season, dropping to 3-1 overall (2-1 in the TTL).
Big plays plagued the Hornet defense all night, especially long pass plays. In the first period, Trojan quarterback Scott Hawley hooked up with wide receiver Eric Weisbrod on a 79 yard touchdown pass. Keith Spencer's extra point put Troy on top 7-0.
Weisbrod caught three passes on the night for 133 yards and a touchdown. Troy completed only five passes, but they were good for 190 yards (38 yards per reception).
The Trojan lead jumped to 10-0 by halftime, thanks to a 20 yard Spencer field goal in the second stanza.
In the third quarter, Hawley hit Tyrone Binford with a 26 yard scoring strike, and Spencer's boot made it 17-0 Troy entering the final quarter. Craig West closed the Trojan scoring on the night when he scored on a five-yard run of his own.
Hornet co-head coach Dave Lintal summed things up by stating that "The passing game hurt us, both ways. They averaged 38 yards per catch, and we threw four interceptions," Lintal said. "We just couldn't get our offense on track."
"On the plus side, Scott Butler did an outstanding job from his linebacker spot on defense. He had nine tackles and assisted on three others. Also, Phil Prough did an excellent job punting the football. He averaged 46 yards on four kicks to keep Troy pinned in their own territory."
Wellsboro travels to Towanda Friday night to face the 4-0 Black Knights. Towanda has allowed only six points in their four games. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
