Waverly downs Wellsboro, 8-6.
| presented by: |
Waverly scored a touchdown in the first quarter and made it stand up as the Wolverines downed visiting Wellsboro 8-6 Friday night. The Hornets finish the season 5-5 overall, 3-5 in Twin Tiers League play.
The Hornets outgained Waverly 324 to 206 in total offense, but some costly turnovers deep in Wolverine territory thwarted several Wellsboro scoring threats.
Waverly dented the end zone first in the opening period and ran a successful two-point conversion to lead 8-0. Wellsboro came right back and scored on their next possession on an eight yard Kevin Cavanaugh run. The two-point attempt failed.
That ended the scoring for the evening, but not the chances. A few crucial turnovers and two missed field goals spelled defeat for Wellsboro.
With little time left in the game, quarterback Damon Scott completed a pass to Phil Prough deep in Waverly territory. Following an injury time out, the Hornets lined up to attempt a field goal. However, the kick missed, and Waverly escaped with the win.
Cavanaugh had a fine night for the Hornets, accounting for 201 of his team's 306 total yards. He caught five passes for 124 yards and gained 86 yards on 16 carries. Scott completed 10 of 27 throws for 200 yards and no interceptions.
The Hornets will be competing in District 4 PIAA playoff action on Friday evening, November 14. Opponent and game site will be determined later.
