The Horseheads Blue Raider football team jumped out to a 26-0 halftime lead Friday night and posted a 38-6 win over host Wellsboro. The loss dropped the Hornets' season slate to 0-3. Horseheads is currently 1-1.
Horseheads scored on the game's opening play as Mike Ketter fielded Wellsboro's kickoff on his own 20-yard line and ran 80 yards for a score. David Pronti's three yard touchdown run later in the quarter, coupled with Steve Franko's point after boot, gave the Blue Raiders a 13-0 lead.
The visitors doubled their edge to 26-0 by intermission as quarterback Marc Sheehan and Tim Cleveland hooked up on a pair of scoring aerials, one of one yard and one of 15 yards. Cleveland caught four of Horseheads' six completions, three of them for touchdowns.
Cleveland caught a 20 yard scoring pass from Sheehan early in the third stanza to up the Blue Raider advantage to 32-0. A Fred Kawa 10 yard touchdown run closed out the Horseheads scoring in the third quarter.
Late in the third period, Wellsboro got their lone points on a two yard scoring run by Matt Lundgren. Lundgren led all Hornet ground gainers with 39 yards on 10 carries.
Wellsboro was hampered by turnovers all night, including three lost fumbles and a pair of interceptions.
The Hornets travel to Canton on Saturday, September 26, for an afternoon contest versus the 3-0 Warriors. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
