The Sayre Redskins turned two turnovers into touchdowns Friday night enroute to posting a 20-12 football win over visiting Wellsboro.

The loss drops the Hornet record to 0-7 overall, 0-5 in Northern Tier League action. Wellsboro fared much better this week than in recent outings, rushing for a season-high 249 yards on 50 attempts.

Six Hornets accounted for all the rushing yardage. Jim Dempsey had 69 yards on 12 carries to lead the Wellsboro ground gainers. Matt Lundgren had 64 yards on 14 attempts before being injured in the second quarter.

Jason Kennedy carried 11 times for 58 yards, Sean Callahan five times for 23 yards, Jeff Zuchowski six for 21 yards, and Todd Wagaman two for 14 yards. Dempsey also caught both Wellsboro completions for 31 yards.

Andy Ennis opened the scoring for Sayre in the second quarter, returning a fumble 11 yards for a touchdown. Pat Esposito added the two-point conversion run, and Sayre led, 8-0.

Dempsey's two yard scoring run late in the first half cut the Redskin edge to two, 8-6, at halftime. Kennedy's five yard touchdown run put the Hornets on top, 12-8, in the third stanza.

Sayre rallied quickly, with Esposito scoring on a 51 yard run on their next possession to take the lead for good, 14-12.

A 48 yard touchdown run on an interception return by freshman Jason George with time running out in the final stanza sealed the win for Sayre.

Esposito was the night's leading rusher, carrying the ball 25 times for 197 yards and a score. Wellsboro travels to Blossburg this Saturday, October 24, for a 2:00 p.m. game with the North Penn Panthers.
