The Towanda Black Knight football team made a touchdown pass and a field goal stand up as they downed Wellsboro 10-7 Friday night at Towanda.
The Northern Tier League loss drops the Hornets to 2-6 overall, 1-4 in league action. Towanda raised its slate to 6-3 overall, 4-1 in NTL play.
The Black Knight defense was the key in this one as they held Wellsboro to 126 total yards, 86 on the ground and 40 through the air.
In addition, Pat Persun rushed 28 times for 145 yards and caught a pair of passes to pace the Towanda offense.
The Hornets kept the game close, allowing only three first half points on a 27 yard Kelly Fesel field goal in the second quarter.
In the third period Black Knight quarterback Chris MeGuire hit Aaron Coldren with a 17 yard scoring pass. Fesel's extra point put Towanda on top 10-0.
Jeff Zuchowski's five yard touchdown run late in the fourth stanza coupled with Bill Doane's extra point made the final count 10-7.
Zuchowski topped Hornet ground gainers with 45 yards on 10 carries. Jim Dempsey added 34 yards on eight totes.
Aaron Singer and Jeff Patterson accounted for 35 of Wellsboro's 40 air yards hauling in catches of 19 and 16 yards respectively.
The Hornets' final game this season will be played versus Wyalusing this Friday night November 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Wellsboro. It is also Parents Night.
