Tony Shattuck scored a pair of touchdowns, one on offense and one on defense, to lead the Canton Warriors to a key 14-6 Northern Tier League football win over visiting Wellsboro on Saturday.

The loss drops the Hornet slate to 2-2 in NTL play, 3-2 overall. Canton improves to 2-0 In league play, 4-1 overall.

After a scoreless first period, Wellsboro moved into scoring position early in the second quarter. On fourth down, the Horhets lined up for a field goal but Shawn Machmer broke through and partially blocked the attempt.

Canton got the ball, then promptly furnbled on their first play from scrimmage. The Hornets once again got into field goal range, but missed a 25 yarder.

At that point, the Warriors executed their lone offensive scoring drive of the afternoon, a three play, 80 yarder, culminated by a 69 yard Damon Perry to Shattuck touchdown pass with just over four minutes left in the half. Perry then hit Machmer with a successful two-point conversion pass to put Canton on top 8-0 at intermission.

In the third period, Wellsboro quarterback Jeff Zuchowski cut the Canton lead to two, 8-6, when he scored on a one yard run. The two-point conversion pass failed.

Zuchowski accounted for 83 of Wellsboro's 90 yards on the scoring drive, with runs of 21, 61, and one yard.

There was no more scoring until Shattuck picked off a Zuchowski pass on the Wellsboro 10-yard line with only a half minute left to play and ran it in to make the final 14-6.

Zuchowski led all ground gainers on the day, rushing for 124 yards on 14 carries. Jason Kennedy added 64 yards of 17 totes.

Seth Yost and Nathan Davis led the Wellsboro defense, which held Canton to only 126 yards rushing on 41 tries, a 3.1 average, and well below the Warrior average over their first four games.

Wellsboro travels to Bald Eagle Nittany on Saturday, October 7 for a non-league contest, scheduled to get underway at 1:30 p.m.
