The Wellsboro Hornet football team wrapped up their regular season with a 42-0 non-league win over North Penn Saturday at Blossburg. The Hornets ended with an 8-3 overall record, 4-2 in Northern Tier League action.
With the win, Wellsboro advances to PIAA Class AA District 4 playoff action for the second time in the four year history of PIAA state playoffs.
The Hornets will play District 4 number one seed Montoursville High School on Friday evening, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Montoursville. In addition to being the District 4 top seed, the Warriors are ranked as the best AA team in Eastern Pennsylvania.
Wellsboro is the number four seed in District 4. If the Hornets win Friday, they will face the winner of the Central Columbia - Wyalusing game on Friday, November 24. That game is also scheduled for this weekend.
Central Columbia is seeded second and Wyalusing third in District 4. The game would be played at either Central Columbia or Wyalusing's field.
At Blossburg Saturday, Wellsboro scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters to coast to their eighth win.
Jason Kennedy led the offensive attack, churning out 124 rushing yards on 19 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Seth Yost added 96 yards on only nine attempts and scoried Wellsboro's first touchdown on a 32 yard run. He also returned an interception 60 yards for an apparent touchdown, but a penalty nullified the score.
Quarterback Jeff Zuchowski carried the ball seven times for 30 yards and a second quarter touchdown. Zuchowski also completed five of eight passes for 115 yards including a beautiful 34 yarder to Chad Cooney for Wellsboro's final score of the day.
The Panthers, held to 101 yards of total offense, were led by Bill Woodward who carried the ball 18 times for 73 yards.
The Hornets finished tie for second in the NTL, two games behind league champions Canton. They also finished as the league's top defensive team, allowing only 54 points in 11 games, a 4.9 points per game average.
One amazing defensive statistic is that only six points have been scored on Wellsboro in the second half this year. And that occured at Canton on an interception return late in the fourth quarter when the defensive unit was not on the field.
