The Wellsboro Hornet football team led by only one point, 7-6, at halftime Friday night at Sayre. Some good second half defense, combined with a 27 point offensive outburst, carried Wellsboro to a 34 6 Northern Tier League win. With the victory, the Hornets improve to 6 3 overall, 3-2 in the NTL.

Wellsboro scored first in this one, on a five yard Seth Yost run. The score was set up by Hornet linebacker Jack Johnson's 28 yard interception return. Oscar Umerez added the extra point to make it 7-0.

Sayre rallied on their next possession as tailback Jonathan Horton scored on a five yard run. The Redskin touchdown was set up by a 68 yard halfback option pass from Horton to Chris Bennett. On the point after try however, Wellsboro defensive tackle George Dowling broke through and blocked the kick.

The second half was all Wellsboro. The Hornet defense held Sayre to eight yards of total offense, led by linebackers Kurt Benjamin and Johnson. Meanwhile, the offense got into high gear scoring 14 points in the third quarter and 13 in the final stanza.

Yost and Jason Kennedy scored on four and nine yard runs respectively to put Wellsboro comfortably ahead 21-6. Kennedy and Benjamin both lit the scoreboard in the fourth period. Kennedy scored on a 25 yard scamper. Benjamin bulled in from three yards out to close out the scoring.

Kennedy ran for 154 yards on 18 carries and a pair of touchdowns on the night. He now has rushed for 1,084 yards this season. Yost chipped in with two scores and 42 yards on nine totes.

Quarterback Jeff Zuchowski completed five of nine throws for 103 yards. Four of the completions and 97 of the yards went to wideout Jeff Patterson.

Almost half of Sayre's offense (44 percent) came on the 68 yard halfback option pass.

The Hornets travel to Wyalusing Friday night, November 3 for a crucial Northern Tier League matchup with the 7-1 Rams. Wellsboro currently boasts the league's top defense. Wyalusing is atop the NTL offensively. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.

If the Hornets win at Wyalusing, District 4 playoff action is a real possibility.
