One breakaway run proved to be the difference in the Columbia Montour Vo-Tech versus Wellsboro homecoming nonleague football game on Friday night at Wellsboro.

On the first play from scrimmage following a Hornet first quarter punt, Vo-Tech's Eric Balliet broke loose and ran for 51 yards and a touchdown.

The touchdown was the only score of the evening as the visitors held on to post a 6-0 win on a mud-filled Wellsboro High School field.

Balliet finished the night with 135 yard rushing on 20 carries.

Wellsboro, plagued by fumbles all night long, managed only 91 yards in total offense, 37 on the ground and 54 through the air.

Rick Robinson and Keith Cavanaugh led the Hornet ground attack. Robinson rushed for 23 yards on carries. Cavanaugh finished with 22 yards on seven totes.

Wellsboro quarterback Jon Cox completed three of 13 passes, with Cavanaugh catching two of them for 23 yards and Josh Ziemak hauling in the other for 31 yards.

This week the 1-6 Hornets travel to Renovo to tackle Bucktail in a Friday night, October 19 contest. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Wellsboro's final home game will be played on Friday night, October 26 against Northern Tier League rival, and currently undefeated, Canton.

That game will also be 7:30 p.m. It is also Parents' Night.
