A fumble recovery for a touchdown by Wellsboro wideout Max Gross broke a tie in the second quarter and began a string of 21 unanswered points as the Hornets posted a 27-6 home football win over North Penn Friday night.

Wellsboro is currently 1-3 on the season.

The hosts got on the scoreboard first on a one yard first quarter touchdown run by quarterback Jon Cox. The point after kick missed and the Hornets took a 6-0 lead into the second stanza.

The Panthers rallied to tie the score at 6-6 on a five yard scoring run by their quarterback, Rob Davis.

Wellsboro then came back and was driving for a score when running back Neil Bogaczyk fumbled into the North Penn end zone. Gross alertly fell on the ball for a touchdown, then caught the two-point conversion pass from Cox to put the Hornets on top 14-6. The lead stayed at eight the rest of the first half.

Wellsboro increased their lead to 21-6 in the third quarter on a five yard touchdown jaunt by Chris Morral. The Hornets, who scored a touchdown in every quarter, got their last six on a 15 yard Steve Davis run in the fourth period.

Bogaczyk had a fine night running the football, gaining 109 yards on 11 carries for a 9.9 yards per carry average. Morral added 81 yards on 16 attempts as the Hornets churned out 231 rushing yards on 44 totes.

Cox completed four of eight passes for 42 yards. He was intercepted once.

Mac Hebe intercepted a pass for the Hornets in the fourth quarter. North Penn finished with 118 yards of total offense, 99 yards coming on the ground and 19 via the air. Davis was the team's top rusher, gaining 49 yards on 10 tries.

Wellsboro travels to Athens this week for Saturday's game versus the Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
