Bishop Walsh tops Green Hornets, 36-6.
| presented by: |
Adam Hodges of Bishop Walsh (Olean, N.Y.) rushed for 106 on 29 carries and one touchdown to lead his Eagles to a 36-6 season opening football win over the Wellsboro Green Hornets Friday night at Wellsboro.
The key to the Bishop Walsh win was their ability to run the ball. The Eagles finished with 289 yards rushing and no yards passing. In addition to Hodges' 106 yards, halfback Billy Anastasia ran for a pair of touchdowns and a total of 94 yards on 11 totes. Quarterback Matt Wallen carried 14 times for 86 yards and two more Eagle touchdowns.
The first quarter ended 6-6 as Wallen ran in from six yards out for Bishop Walsh and Wellsboro quarterback Jon Cox punched it in from one yard away. Both teams' point after attempts were unsuccessful.
The Eagles opened up some breathing room in the second quarter, outscoring Wellsboro 16-0. Wallen scored on a seven yard run and Hodges bulled over from a yard out for the touchdowns. Wallen also connected on a pair of two-point conversion passes, the first going to Brian Ulasewicz and the second to Jeremy Kellen.
The Hornets threatened late in the second period, following a Noyes Lawton pass interception, but time ran out with Wellsboro inside the Eagles' 10-yard line.
Anastasia provided all the scoring in the second half, going over from one yard out in the third quarter and from 22 yards out in the final stanza. He also added a two-point conversion run following his second touchdown.
The Hornets moved the ball well on the ground, amassing 148 yards on 30 carries.
Chris Morral was the Hornets leading ground gainer, rushing for 66 yards on 11 tries. Neil Bogaczyk added 53 yards on nine attempts and Ben Largey had 29 yards on seven carries.
Cox also completed four of nine passes on the evening. Largey caught a pair for nine yards, Morral grabbed one for 12 yards and Devin Montgomery added a catch good for seven yards.
Wellsboro opens their Northern Tier League season on Friday evening, September 11 at Troy. The Bishop Walsh game was a non-leaguer.
