An 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half by Canton's Matt Machmer set the tone for the Warriors' 34-7 Northern Tier League football win over Wellsboro Friday night at Wellsboro.

Machmer, Canton's senior quarterback-turned-tailback, rushed for two other touchdowns and finished with 188 yards on 19 carries.

Wellsboro played a gutsy first half, trailing by only seven, 14-7, at intermission, Machmer opened the scoring with a nine yard scoring run in the first quarter. Chris Morral's 53 yard touchdown blast and Ché Regina's extra point tied the score at 7-7 in the second period.

Just before the half, Machmer broke free and raced 78 yards for the score that put the Warriors ahead to stay at 14-7.

Machmer's 80 yard jaunt with the second half opening kickoff, followed by his third straight extra point kick put Canton on top 21-7 and seemed to deflate the Hornets.

The game's final two touchdowns, one later in the third quarter and one in the final stanza, were both scored by Shannon Terry on runs of 28 and 17 yards. Morral finished as Wellsboro's top ground gainer with 96 yards on 11 carries.

The Hornets travel to Coudersport this Saturday, November. 7 for a 7:30 p.m. game versus the Falcons.

Wellsboro is currently 3-6 overall and 1-4 in NTL play. The Coudersport contest is a non-leaguer. Canton is 6-1 overall, 3-1 in the NTL.
