Chris Morral ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wellsboro Hornet football team to a tough 22-15 win over Towanda Friday night at Towanda.
Morral got his 202 yards on 17 carries for an amazing 11.9 yards per carry average. The junior tailback scored on runs of 25, 16, and 75 yards. The last two were in the pivotal fourth quarter, a quarter in which the Hornets outscored the hosts 13-0 to win for the second time this season.
Ché Regina got the scoring underway, splitting the uprights with a 20 yard field goal to put the Hornets on top 3-0 in the first period.
Joe Martin answered for the Black Knights later in the quarter, scoring on a five yard run, then adding the extra point to put his team on top 7-3. Martin almost matched the rushing numbers turned in by Morral as he ran for 192 yards on 33 totes and scored both Towanda six-pointers.
Morral answered Martin's scoring run with one of his own on the Hornets' next possession, going in from 25 yards out. The extra point kick missed and Wellsboro clung to a tenuous 9-7 lead after one quarter of play.
There was no scoring in the second period. Towanda had the best opportunity marching down to the Hornet one-yard line with time running out in the half. The Black Knights fumbled however, and Wellsboro's Pete Conte recovered just before halftime.
Towanda regained the lead in the third quarter with Martin bulling over from 11 yards out. Martin also added the two-point conversion run to take a 15-9 lead entering the final period of play.
Morral answered Martin's touchdown with one of his own on a 16 yard run just five seconds into the fourth quarter. Regina's point after boot gave Wellsboro a 16-15 lead, one they would never relinquish.
Later in the period, Towanda had a chance to take the lead, but a 20 yard field goal attempt missed. Following the miss, Wellsboro took over at their own five-yard line. Several plays later Morral broke free and scored on a 75 yard run for a touchdown and a 22-15 Wellsboro advantage.
The Black Knights came back for a final shot at a tie or perhaps a win, but lost a fumble deep in Hornet territory with time running out.
Towanda lost three fumbles on the night, Wellsboro played a turnover free game.
The teams combined for 576 rushing yards on the night; but only 67 yards in the air. Towanda finished with 307 yards rushing on 53 carries. The Hornets ran for 269 yards on 29 attempts.
Wellsboro hosts Columbia Montour Vo-Tech Friday evening, October 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hornets' homecoming tilt. The Hornets are currently 2-4 overall, 1-3 in Northern Tier League play. Towanda falls to 1-5 overall, 0-1 in NTL action.
