The Wellsboro Green Hornet defense held Jersey Shore to only 103 yards of total offense en route to a hard fought 7-6 football win over the Bulldogs Friday night at Wellsboro.

All the scoring was done in the first quarter. The first score came on a 62 yard interception return by Jersey Shore's Ivy Lathan. The point after kick failed and the visitors led 6-0.

On their next possession, Wellsboro took the ball on their own 35-yard line and culminated a 12 play, 65 yard drive with a 16 yard touchdown pass from Chad Watters to running back Neil Bogaczyk. Ché Regina's extra point kick proved to be the difierence.

Chris Morral was the Hornet's leading ground gainer, churning out 98 yards on 26 carries. Bogaczyk added 95 more yards on four pass receptions, plus Wellsboro's lone touchdown.

Watters finished the night with 10 completions in 18 tries for 141 yards. He was intercepted once for the Bulldog's only points.

The Hornet defense looked outsized but more than held their own against Jersey Shore. They limited the visitors to 73 rushing yards and only 30 yards on a pair of pass completions. They also came up with two interceptions against Jersey Shore quarterback Mike Caseman. Mike Sarr was the Bulldog's leading rusher with 66 yards on 15 carries.

The game was slowed by a rash of penalties, Wellsboro being flagged seven times for 75 yards and Jersey Shore losing 86 yards on seven plays.

The win improved Wellsboro to 1-2 on the 1993 season, 0-1 in Northern Tier League action.

On Saturday night, September 25, the Hornets travel to Mansfield to take on the North Penn Panthers at 7:00 p.m. at Smythe Park.

The game is part of Mansfield's "Fabulous 1890's Weekend" festivities, which will include a reenactment of the world's first night football game at halftime.
