The Wellsboro Hornets topped North Penn 27-2 Saturday night in the first ever GE Light Bowl football game at Smythe Park in Mansfield.

The game between the two local high schools was just part of the festivities for the Fabulous 1890's Weekend in Mansfield, September 24-26.

Ian Carson rushed for three touchdowns and 83 on just seven carries to lead the Wellsboro offensive attack. Carson, subbing most of the game for the injured Chris Morral, scored on two runs of 20 yards and one of 15.

Morral had gained 52 yards on six totes before suffering a neck injury in the second quarter.

Carson got Wellsboro on the scoreboard first, running in from 20 yards out in the first period. Ché Regina's extra point boot put the Hornets on top 7-0.

Two second quarter touchdowns put Wellsboro in command 21-0 by intermission. Jared Mahon reached the end zone on a nine yard run and Carson went over from 15 yards out. Regina added both extra points.

Carson ended the Hornets' scoring in the third stanza, scoring his third touchdown, this one another 20 yard blast.

In the fourth quarter, Carson was again involved in the scoring, but this time for North Penn, as the Panther defense dropped him in his own end zone for a late safety and a shutout averting two points.

Wellsboro quarterback Chad Watters completed three of eight throws for 38 yards and no interceptions.

Phil Boinske, the Panther quarterback, hit on two of nine attempts for 35 yards. He was intercepted. Despite some slippery playing conditions due to rain, the Hornets offense never turned the ball over.

Both defenses played well, the Hornets allowing only 141 yards in total offense to North Penn, while the Panthers held Wellsboro to 202 total yards.

Teake Yeager was North Perm's top ground gainer, churning out 50 yards on 13 carries. Kevin Ollock added 47 yards on 24 tries. Yeager also caught a Boinske pass for 25 yards.

Wellsboro hosts Athens this Friday evening, October 1 at 7:30 p.m.The Hornets are currently 2-2; North Penn is 0-4.
