Sayre running back Dave Coyle ran for 207 and four touchdowns as the Redskins downed Wellsboro 26-17 in a Northern Tier League football contest at Sayre Friday night.
Coyle scored on runs of 72, 59, three, and 59 yards as Sayre improved to 2-2 in NTL play, 2-5 overall.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 3-4 on the year, 1-3 in the NTL. Chris Morral accounted for the bulk of the Wellsboro offense, rushing for 167 yards on 33 carries. He scored the Hornets' first touchdown on a one yard blast in the opening period.
Wellsboro ran out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter on Morral's touchdown run and a 21 yard scoring pass from quarterback Chad Watters to Ian Carson. The two Hornet scores were sandwiched around Coyle's first touchdown, a 72 yarder. Ché Regina kicked both Wellsboro's extra points.
Sayre went ahead to stay in the second quarter as Coyle scored on runs of 59 and three yards, to put the home team on top 20-14 at the half.
The lone third quarter scoring was a Regina 24 yard field goal which cut Sayre's lead to three, 20-17.
In the fourth period, Coyle's second 59 yard touchdown run of the night put the lid on Sayre's victory. Sayre rushed for 290 yards on 36 attempts to account for all but 11 yards of their total offense.
Coyle averaged 13.8 yards per carry and Mark Wells added 73 yards on 15 totes as the duo accounted for all but 10 of the Redskin rushing yards.
Watters completed eight of 19 passes for Wellsboro but was victimized by four interceptions. Carson caught two balls for 35 yards and a touchdown to lead the Hornet receiving corps.
This Saturday, October 23, Wellsboro travels to Columbia Montour Vo-Tech for a 1:30 p.m. non-league contest.
