The Wellsboro Hornet football team ran out to a 21-0 lead over Troy Friday night, then held on to top the Trojans 21-12 at Wellsboro.
The win evens the Hornets' season record at 3-3. They are 1-2 in Northern Tier League play.
Chris Morral, who didn't play in the second half due to a recurring neck injury, scored the game's only two first half touchdowns.
In the first quarter, Morral fielded a Troy punt at the Troy 40-yard line and raced to the end zone for the game's first score. A two point conversion run by Ian Carson put the hosts on top 8-0.
The Wellsboro edge stretched to 14-0 in the second period on a 23 yard touchdown pass from Chad Watters to Morral. The extra point kick was blocked.
Watters had a fine outing for the Hornets, completing 12-of-25 passes for 212 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted once.
Carson, who finished the night with 85 rushing yards on nine carries, scored the final Hornet touchdown on a third period 15 yard run. Ché Regina's point after kick put Wellsboro in command 21-0.
Troy scored touchdowns in each of the final two quarters to cut their deficit to nine, but were unable to get any closer.
Jim Smith's four yard touchdown run in the third stanza got the Trojans on the scoreboard. Smith ended the night as the game's top rusher, carrying the leather 26 times for 133 yards.
Troy's second touchdown came on a "Fumblerooski" run by offensive lineman John Cole. With the Trojans on Wellsboro's 15-yard line, quarterback Ryan Allen took the snap from center, put the ball on the ground, and watched as Cole picked it up and rumbled 15 yards for the score.
Troy was 0-for-2 on two-point conversion pass attempts.
This Friday, October 15, Wellsboro travels to Sayre for a date with the Redskins. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
