The Wellsboro Hornet football team put on their most impressive performance of the 1994 season to date, winning their homecoming game over Canton 32-0 Friday night.
The game was won in the trenches as the Hornet offensive line opened holes for Ian Carson and Jared Mahon all night. The duo finished with 314 yards rushing between them on 34 carries.
Carson netted 191 yards on 22 totes while Mahon had 123 yards on only 12 tries.
The Wellsboro defense was equally impressive, holding the visitors to only 72 yards rushing and 175 yards of total offense.
A 44 yard touchdown run by Carson, his first of two first half scores, put the Hornets up 6-0 midway through the first quarter. Mahon doubled the Hornet edge to 12-0 late in the first period when he found the end zone on a 34 yard run.
Carson's two yard touchdown run and Ché Regina's extra point put Wellsboro ahead 19-0 by intermission.
Following a scoreless third period, Wellsboro added two more scores in the final stanza.
The first one came on quarterback Jay Young's only completion of the night, a 38 yarder to Regina. Regina also kicked the extra point to make it 26-0.
The Hornet rushing offense was to effective that Young only attempted three passes on the night Wellsboro's ground attack chewed up 335 yards on 43 carries, an average of 7.8 yards per rush. Mahon and Carson averaged 9.2 yards per carry.
Wellsboro's last score of the night came late in the fourth quarter on a five yard touchdown jaunt by Dan Sullivan.
Canton quarterback Bryan Smith completed 11-of-23 passes for 103 yards. He was intercepted once. Matt Morris caught four balls for 33 yards, Bob Woodward added 37 yards on three receptions.
Wellsboro was penalized 11 times for 85 yards, about their only negative statistic on the evening. They also played a turnover free game.
The win puts the Hornets 3-3 overall, 1-2 in Northern Tier League action. Wellsboro travels to Towanda on Friday night, October 14 for a 7:30 p.m. NTL game versus the Black Knights.
