Hornets upset Jersey Shore.

The Welkboro Hornet football team traveled to Jersey Shore Friday, and turned in by far and away their top performance to date. The Hornets, 0-2 going into the game, stung Jersey Shore 22-6 to record win number one.

The visitors put one touchdown on the board in each of the first three quarters, while the defense held the bulldogs to only one second period touchdown.

The non-league victory upped Wellsboro's record to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in Northern Tier League play.

Quarterback Jay Young opened the Hornet scoring when he went in from a yard out in the first quarter. Ché Regina's point after put the Hornets on top 7-0.

In the second stanza, Jersey Shore rallied to cut their deficit to one, 7-6, following a 63 yard touchdown run by Eric Wheary.

Then came the big play of the night for the Hornets. Ian Carson fielded Jersey Shore's kickoff on his own 11-yard line and dashed 89 yards to paydirt. Erick Crawford then found Jared Mahon on a successful two point conversion pass and the Wellsboro lead swelled to nine, 15-6.

The lone touchdown in the second half was the Hornets' first passing touchdown this season. Young found Regina with a 22 yard scoring strike. It was Wellsboro's lone completion of the night, on only three attempts. Regina's extra point closed out the scoring.

Mahon accounted for 103 of Wellsboro's 149 rushing yards on only eight carries (12.9 yards per rush).

Wheary accounted for the bulk of the Bulldog offense, rambling for 111 yards on 18 totes.

Wellsboro played a turnover free game, Jersey Shore lost one fumble.

Friday night, Wellsboro hosts North Penn in another non-league game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Panthers are currently 0-3.
