Sayre tops Wellsboro, 14-7.

The Sayre Redskins scored 14 second quarter points Friday night, then withstood a Wellsboro second half rally to post a 14-7 Northern Tier League football win at WHS.

The loss drops Wellsboro to 0-2 for the season. Sayre improved to 1-1.

Quarterback Ben Dutchess put Sayre on the scoreboard first when he plowed into the end zone from one yard out. He added the extra point boot and the Redskins led 7-0 early in the second quarter.

Later in the second period, Dave Coyle scored on a three yard and following the Dutchess point after kick, the Redskins took a seemingly comfortable 14-0 lead into the half.

The Wellsboro defense stiffened in the second half, but their offense couldn't find the end zone until midway through the fourth stanza.

Ian Carson, who finished with 97 yards on 18 carries for Wellsboro, ran in from 27 yards and the Ché Regina extra point kick cut Sayre's lead in half.

The Hornet defense again held Sayre and the offense got the ball back with a final chance to score. Wellsboro got into Redskin territory, but an interception with just over two minutes left to play sealed the win for the visitors.

Matt Chambers rumbled for 109 yards on 21 carries to lead the Sayre ground assault. The Redskins ran for 225 yards on 51 carries. Dutchess added 39 yards on nine attempts to the Sayre total, while Coyle carried 15 times for 35 yards.

Jared Mahon backed Carson for the Hornets, gaining 48 yards on only five carries.

Wellsboro quarterback Jay Young completed four of six throws for 51 yards. Erick Crawford caught two of them. Regina hauled in one for 27 yards and Russ Manney one for 14 yards.

This Friday night, September 16, Wellsboro travels to Jersey Shore for a 7:30 p.m. contest versus the Bulldogs.
