Quarterback Jay Young scored three touchdowns Friday night to lead the Wellsboro Hornets to a 24-13 football win over the Towanda Black Knights at Towanda.

WelUboro improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in Northern Tier League play. Towanda is 0-6-1 overall, 0-4-1 in the NTL.

Towanda lit the scoreboard when running back Joe Bowen ran one in from 26 yards out. The extra point boot by Bill Allen was good and The Black Knights led 7-0 early in the first quarter.

Young scored the first of his three touchdowns later in the first period, going over from two yards out. Ché Regina ran the successful two point conversion and Wellsboro took the lead for good, 8-7.

The second quarter was scoreless and the visitors took their one point lead into the second half. That lead swelled to 10 points in the third stanza.

First, Wellsboro linebacker Erick Crawford sacked Black Knight quarterback Allen in the end zone for a safety and a 10-7 lead. Then Young scored again, this time from 12 yards out. Regina's point after kick made it 17-7.

In the fourth period, Towanda rallied when Allen scored from two yards out, to make it 17-13. The two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

Young's third touchdown, following a Towanda turnover, closed the door on the Black Knight comeback chances. Wellsboro recovered a fumble at midfield and drove to the one-yard line. Young scored from there and Regina's extra point finished the scoring.

Ian Carson was Wellsboro's top ground gainer, lugging the ball 17 times for 99 yards. Jared Mahon ran seven times for 30 yards.

Young, in addition to scoring three touchdowns, completed 5-of-12 passes for 59 yards and no interceptions. Carson, Regina, Crawford, and Mahon all had catches.

Bowen was Towanda's top rushing, carrying 18 times for 55 yards and one touchdown.

A key to the Hornet win was turnovers. Towanda lost two fumbles and had one pass intercepted. Wellsboro had no turnovers.
