It was billed as a blowout. An easy win for the visitors. A 31st consecutive loss for the out-manned hosts. Well, when the mud settled Saturday afternoon, it was a definite case of all of the above.

The Wellsboro Hornet football team traveled to Columbia Montour Vo-Tech (near Bloomsburg), rolled up 498 rushing yards, and totally dominated play in a 70-0 rout that was as one-sided as the score would indicate.

Wellsboro amassed 498 rushing yards on only 33 carries for a surrealistic 15.1 yards per carry average. Combine that with the Hornets' 555 rushing yards last week on 50 attempts and you've got some fairly staggering statistics. Like 1,053 yards on 83 carries, like 12.7 yards average gain per play. Like unbelievable!

The 7-1 Hornets, who sat their starters for the entire second half, erupted for 51 points before the halftime gun.

Russ Manney scored four first half touchdowns, Jared Mahon added two, Tony Dinsmore and Bill Linder chipped in with one each. And... the shortest of the eight scores was a 25 yard Mahon touchdown run in the second quarter.

Wellsboro got on the board with 25 first period points, Manney scoring on runs of 34,63, and 62 yards. Mahon sandwiched a 60 yard scoring jaunt between Manney's 63 and 62 yarders. Things got no better for the Rams in the second stanza.

Dinsmore hauled in a 29 yard scoring strike from Hornet quarterback Jay Young to make it 32-0.

Manney ran in from 45 yards out for his fourth and final touchdown. Mahon scored on his 25 yarder and Linder returned a Columbia Montour Vo-Tech interception 33 yards just before the intermission.

The only suspense left was who would win the final score pool.

A swarm of Hornets who had seen little or no varsity playing time got into the act in the second half. Andy DeLeonardis and Matt Sweet both scored their first ever touchdowns. DeLeonardis ran in from two yards out in the third quarter and from 17 yards late in the fourth. Sweet bulled over from two yards out earlier in the final stanza.

Wellsboro threw only three times on the afternoon, completing two for 97 yards.

In addition to Dinsmore's 29 yard touchdown strike from Young, DeLeonardis caught John Lundgren's only attempt for a 68 yard gain.

Manney finished with 219 yards on only eight carries. Half of the rushes went for touchdowns.

Mahon rushed the ball 11 times for 192 yards. DeLeonardis, Sweet, and Matt Nickeson churned out 53, 13, and 21 yards respectively.

Wellsboro hosts Troy this Friday night, October 27. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
