The Wellsboro Hornets ground out a total of 278 rushing yards on 36 carries (a 7.7 yards per carry average) en route to a 45-12 non-league home football win over Marian Catholic on Saturday night.

The 5-0 Hornets totally dominated the line of scrimmage, both offensively and defensively. Add to that five Marian Catholic turnovers, two of which were returned for scores, and you've got a rout!

Wellsboro scored the game's first 39 points over three and a half quarters.

When the final gun sounded, Jay Young had found the end zone three times, Russ Manney and Jared Mahon twice each, and the Hornets can now look forward to their crucial Northern Tier League encounter at Wyalusing Friday night.

Wellsboro's first score, and the only points in the first period, came when quarterback Young ran in from 18 yards out. Chris Fuller's extra point put the hosts on top 7-0.

A 20 point Hornet scoring barrage in the second quarter put the game out of reach.

Young scored again, this time from his cornerback position, when he picked off a Marian Catholic pass and ran it back 47 yards for a touchdown. Fuller again booted the extra point.

Not to be outdone, Wellsboro linebacker Jared Mahon got between Marian Catholic quarterback Chuck Andrews and running back Rick Balliet, picked off a lateral and ran it 47 yards for the second touchdown on the day by the Hornet "D."

Russ Manney, who finished the evening with a game high 176 yards on only 13 carries, ran one in from four yards out just before halftime to make the count 27-0 at intermission.

Things only got worse for the visitors following the break.

Manney broke free at his own 31-yard line and raced 69 yards to paydirt and a 33-0 Hornet lead early in the third stanza.

Later, in the quarter Manney got loose again and rumbled 61 yards deep into Marian Catholic territory. Young went the final yard for his third touchdown and a 39-0 lead.

Marian Catholic got on the scoreboard late in the third period when Balliet ran in from one yard out.

Mahon's second touchdown of the night, this one on a 13 yard run in the fourth quarter from his running back position on offense, closed out the Wellsboro scoring.

James Sauka's 26 yard touchdown reception from Andrews late in the final period put Marian Catholic on the board for the second time and made the final 45-12.
