The Wellsboro Hornet football team improved to 9-1 on the season, 5-1 in the Northern Tier League, following a 40-0 win at Sayre Friday night.

The win, coupled with Wyalusing's 14-13 victory over Athens earned the Hornets the number two seed in PIAA District 4 Class AA playoff action.

This Friday night at 7:00 p.m., Wellsboro will host Line Mountain in one District 4 semi-final game, while Wyalusing, the top seed, squares off against Western Wayne in the other semi-final game.

The winners of each game will play for the district championship.

The duo of Jared Mahon and Russ Manney provided most of the Hornet scoring punch.

Mahon crossed the goal line three times, twice on defense and once as a running back.

Manney scored on two runs and Matt Kennedy added one rushing touchdown on his only carry of the evening.

The game was close at half time, with Wellsboro leading 8-0 on a Mahon 48 yard interception return in the second quarter. Quarterback Jay Young ran in the successful two-point conversion.

In the third period, Mahon and Manney both scored, Mahon from three yards out and Manney from the 15-yard stripe. Chris Fuller's point after following Manney's touchdown made it 21-0 Wellsboro entering the final stanza.

Manney, Kennedy, and Mahon sealed the Hornet victory in the fourth quarter Manney and Kennedy both ran in from seven yards and Mahon scored on a 28 yard jaunt with a recovered fumble.

The Hornet defense played a solid game, allowing the hosts only 114 yards of total offense, 51 rushing yards in 32 attempts, and 63 yards through the air on seven completions.

The Wellsboro "D" also came up with six turnovers, four interceptions, and a pair of fumble recoveries.

Manney topped Hornet ground gainers, churning out 104 yards on 18 carries. Mahon finished with 86 yards on 13 tries and Young added 46 yards on five totes.
