The Welleboro Hornet football team stumbled for the first time this season, losing 13-0 to a solid Wyalusing squad Friday night at Wyalusing.

The loss dropped the Hornets to 5-1 overall, 2-1 in Northern Tier League play. Wyalusing is also 5-1 overall, but 3-0 in the NTL.

Wellsboro played terrific defense in the first half, holding the Rams to a total offense of -6 yards. But the lack of good field position and their inability to mount any sustained drives kept the Hornets tied, 0-0, at the half.

Midway through the third quarter, Wellsboro lined up to punt on fourth down, Clay McCarty fielded the kick on his own 19-yard line and raced 81 yards to the game's first score. That play seemed to take the life out of the visitors. The extra point put Wyalusing on top for good, 7-0.

On the fourth play of the fourth period, Ryan Johns bulled over from eight yards out to make it 13-0 and close out the scoring.

Russ Manney led the Wellsboro ground attack, rushing for 80 yards in 15 carries. Jared Mahon added 24 yards on seven totes and Mitch Marzo finished with 19 yards on only two attempts.

Quarterback Jay Young completed four of 13 passes for 63 yards.

Ed Murphy caught two balls for 45 yards, Scot Boyce hauled in the other two for 18 more yards.

Towanda comes to town this Friday night for the annual Wellsboro Homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. with plenty of halftime festivities in store.

There will also be a parade in downtown Wellsboro, getting underway at 5:00 p.m. The annual Homecoming Dance follows the football game.
