Hornet Gridders Drop Third Straight Game.
| presented by: |
The Wellsboro Green Hornet football team managed to score as many offensive touchdowns as the opposition for the second week in a row last Friday when they took on the Jersey Shore Bulldogs Unfortunately for Wellsboro, it was also their third loss in a row, a 20-13 defeat.
For the Green Hornets to win last week's game, they needed to come up with some big defensive plays. They did.
For Wellsboro to win, they also had to have a solid offense capable of driving the ball against against a physical Shore defense. They did not.
Wellsboro managed only 118 total yards on offense and was penalized for 29 yards. That number is deceiving as many of the penalties were close to Wellsboro's own goal line and were half the distance to the goal. The Green Hornets only made six first downs against middle linebacker Wally Spotts and the rest of the Bulldog defense.
After the first play, Wellsboro's fortunes seemed to be going the way they needed. The Green Hornets recovered a Jersey Shore Jamie Thomas fumble on the first play of the game. Unfortunately for them, their offense could not take advantage of the short field and score.
The one offensive bright spot for Wellsboro came in the first quarter when qu arterback Jake Banik connected with Derek Allen for an 18 yard touchdown pass.
That score put Wellsboro in the lead for the first time this year. That lead would not be long lived as Jersey Shore responded with their own touchdown on the very next drive when Jamie Thomas scored on a two yard touchdown run.
The Shore defense came up with the next touchdown, the score that made the difference in the game.
Wellsboro received the ball in good field position after the Bulldogs scored their first touchdown. But Wellsboro made four penalties, three of them consecutive, to back them up to their own one foot line.
Spotts took advantage of the situation and blitzed, causing a fumble in the backfield that Jersey Shore jumped on to make the score 13-7.
The Bulldogs scored on their next possession as well to put the score at 20-7 by the half. Wellsboro got their next big defensive play in the middle of the fourth quarter when Josh Bundy picked up a fumble and ran it back 35 yards to the Shore 16-yard line.
The Green Hornets managed to score on a four yard touchdown pass from Banik to Jesse May to make the score a one touchdown difference, 20-14.
Wellsboro could not recover the onside kick and the Bulldogs ran the clock out on the ground to end the game.
Wellsboro will play host to the Sayre Redskins this Friday night.
