South holds Hornets scoreless.

The Wellsboro Green Hornets gained less than 100 yards of total offense last Friday night when powerful South Williamsport came to town and beat the Hornets 41-0 in a game marked by five Wellsboro turnovers.

The shutout also marked the third game in a row that Wellsboro has been held scoreless. In the last five games, the Green Hornets have been able to score a single touchdown. That score came against Canton in Wellsboro's homecoming game one month ago.

The first play of Friday night's game was a harbinger of things to come when the Green Hornets muffed the kickoff and South Williamsport pounced on the ball at the 47-yard line. It took South Williamsport six plays to drive half the field and put their first score up on the board with 9:55 left to play in the first quarter.

South Williamsport scored two more touchdowns before the first quarter expired. Wellsboro's first quarter was marked by two quick punts, and two interceptions.

The Mountaineers kept the ball on the ground throughout the first quarter, passing only once. Unfortunately for the Green Hornets, that pass play went for 19 yards and set up South's first touchdown.

Wellsboro relied on the legs of Shane Mascho for all of their first quarter running plays. He managed to find the corner just once, breaking off a sweep for 13 yards before the South Williamsport could converge on him.

South Williamsport added another pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and a final touchdown in the third quarter to make the score 41-0. The first four South Williamsport touchdowns were running touchdowns. Four of those runs were of two yards or less. Their final score was a 32 yard pass play.

Wellsboro's final offensive stats were anemic. They netted just 71 yards of total offense. 69 of those yards came on the ground as Wellsboro completed just two passes on nine attempts.

Between two quarterbacks, Wellsboro threw four interceptions. South Williamsport had a total of 184 yards of 35 carries. The Mountaineers spread the wealth around in the running attack with six backs getting carries.

South Williamsport was 4-5 in the passing department for 105 yards.

Wellsboro will travel to Athens this Saturday for their final game of the season. Wellsboro is now 1-8 on the season with their only win coming against Sayre in the fourth game of the season.
