Wellsboro tried for the comeback late in the fourth quarter but were not able to convert. Canton held on defensively to end a seven game losing streak and the Warriors edged Wellsboro 20-14 Saturday, October 30.

Each team was evenly matched on offense as the Green Hornets out rushed the Warriors 197-167.

Derek Harsch once again led the Wellsboro ground attack by racking up 101 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

The score was scoreless during the first quarter of play.

After not finding success on offense in the first quarter, the Warriors opened the second quarter and went to the air to get on the board first. Canton signal caller Zach Detweiler connected with Dan Doty on a nine yard touchdown pass. Canton's two-point conversion failed.

Wellsboro was not able to formulate a scoring drive and trailed Canton 6-0 at the end of the first half. Canton came out in the second half and widened their lead 6:53 into the frame.

Canton forged their way to Wellsboro's three-yard line where Adam Herman took the hand off and bulled his way in for the score from three yards out. Herman added a two point conversion run and Canton held a 14-0 lead.

Wellsboro (2-6) got their first score of the game 23 seconds later. Harsch broke around the end and out ran the Warrior pack on a 32 yard scoring scamper. Dave Laczi's extra point split the up rights and Wellsboro trailed by 7 with 6:31 remaining.

Canton set up their next touchdown on a Adam Kitchen 48 yard interception return.

Wellsboro signal caller Jake Banik was 3-of-14 on the day for 41 yards with three interceptions.

Four and one half minutes into the fourth quarter, Canton found success again in the air. Detwiler found Wes Moore open in the end zone and lobbed the ball three yards for the score. Following two 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the Warriors were forced to attempt the two point conversion from their 33-yard line. The extra point pass fell incomplete and Canton held a 13 point lead over the Green Hornets.

Detwiler was four-of-9 on the day for 49 yards but Wellsboro picked off four of his passes. Matt Powers, Jared Hurlburt, Kevin Shultz, and Banik each picked off Detwiler passes.

Wellsboro formulated a scoring campaign a minute after Canton's score. The Green Hornets forged their down field courtesy of two pass interference calls against Canton. Wellsboro cut the Canton lead to six points when Jamie Palmer darted in for the score on a 15 yard rush and a Laczi extra point.

Wellsboro made two last desperation attempts to score during their following possession but the two Banik passes fell incomplete.

Wellsboro will host Athens for their last game of the season Friday, November 5. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
