The Jersey Shore defense may have held the Green Hornets running game near nil Friday night, 60 yards on 32 carries, but it wasn't so much the bite of the 'Dawgs that hampered Wellsboro as much as it was lack of execution.

Wellsboro head coach Mike Pietropola has watched the Green Hornets' offense stagger during the last two games, 58 rushes for 130 yards.

Friday night's 28-0 shutout may have been a non-league loss, but the same principles apply in league games according to the head coach. If you don't execute, you don't win.

"After the game I was lost for words," Pietropola said, "The Jersey Shore defense did a nice job but it was more of a case where we didn't execute that hurt us."

The Hornets entered the game with a thorough scouting report and knew Jersey Shore held a potent pass threat.

The 'Dawgs won their first outing of the season behind the arm of Jared Lehman. Lehman led Jersey Shore to a 28-0 shutout of Bald Eagle Area striking for 185 yards in the air. He was only one yard short of that mark in the win over Wellsboro by throwing 184 yards and one touchdown.

"We thought the big key was (Justin) Hershey and the defense did a nice job covering him," Pietropola said. "Then they went to the other kid and we had some blown coverage."

The Green Hornet defense held the 'Dawgs scoreless in the first quarter but Shore overcame Wellsboro two minutes into the second frame for a 7-0 lead.

Jersey Shore earned the lead on a Lehman plunge from one yard out.

Lack of execution may have been the key factor to critical mistakes on offense. The Hornets coughed up the ball five times. Two were recovered by Jersey Shore. Wellsboro was also penalized five times with 35 yards marked against the squad.

Wellsboro was unable to formulate a productive offensive drive once again due to execution according to Pietropola.

"Turnovers and penalties hurt really bad this week," Pietropola said.

Torey Packard gained the least amount of yards for Jersey Shore with two yards. But they were quality yards.

Packard earned his two yards rushing four minutes into the third quarter when he capped off a successful Shore drive with a two yard plunge into the end zone for the 13-0 lead.

Shore missed the extra point boot but the 'Dawgs earned back the missed point when they repeated with their second touchdown in less than three minutes.

This time two aerial assaults led to a 21-0 lead.

The first Lehman lob found Justin Hershey who pulled in the pass and scooted 19 yards for the score. Lehman followed with completion to Justin Yost on the two-point conversion.

Just to keep things coherent in the third quarter, Shore struck again in the final minutes of the frame when Justin Yost took the hand-off and dozed his way through the line on a 28 yard touchdown scamper with 42 seconds remaining.

Yost and Miller paced the 'Dawgs on the ground for 103 of Shore's 136 yards rushing.

Wellsboro's running game was paced by Derek Harsch, 46 yards rushing, and David Russell with 24 yards.

Wellsboro quarterback Tyler DeLeonardis, who felt the pressure of the 'Dawg defense, was 4-of-8 for 24 yards passing. Brad Jones was the leading receiver with two completions for 21 yards.

Wellsboro returns to league play this Friday, September 22, when they host Canton.
