Poor execution, turnovers, and two coaching decisions led to the Wellsboro Hornets losing their home opener to the Wyalusing Rams football team.

After taking a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 77 yard pass play from Pat Coolidge to Shawn Tom the offense died. The extra point kick by Pat Coolidge was wide right. The Hornets were held scoreless by the Rams.

Coach Chris Morral said, "Our quarterback Pat Coolidge and the team took a step backward. Our defense played well enough to win but our offense failed to execute."

Three turnovers inside the Rams' 20-yard line kept the Hornets from forging a larger lead.

Rams' coach Gary Otis decided to abandon the passing game in the second half and to pound the Hornets with a running game looking for a long scoring run. Quarterback Ben Fish's lone completion was for 13 yards to running back Greg Shantz.

The running attack was led by Shantz who finished with 151 yards for the game, 98 in the second half including a 38  yard touchdown run that tied the game.

The point after kick made the difference in the game. With 4:44 remaining in the game and trailing by a point, Coach Morral decided to punt the ball to the Rams with the idea that the Hornets' defense could hold and his team would have a last shot at winning the game.

The Rams got the ball inside their own 20-yard line and ended the game with nine running plays that ate up 33 yards and the last 4:44 on the clock.

The Hornets rushed for 62 yards on 31 carries; passed for 181 on six completions in 16 attempts with five interceptions; lost their one fumble; and amassed 40 yards in penalties.

The Rams passed for 13 yards on one completion in 11 attempts; rushed for 171 yards on 43 carries, and lost all three of their fumbles.

The Hornets dropped to 1-1 record in NTL play.

The Hornets travel to Jersey Shore to play the Jersey Shore team in a non-league game September 17 and are looking for a turn around from the performance in this game by the offense.
