Wellsboro Hornet football stung again.
| presented by: |
The Wellsboro Green Hornets limited their mistakes on the gridiron Friday night, but could not convert enough big plays as they fell to visiting Muncy, 21-6.
The more experienced Muncy Indians defense only allowed two first half first downs and kept the pressure on all night.
The Hornets showed some life in the second half, but could never overcome the deficit.
"I was happy to see us come back in the second half," Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral commented after the game.
He noted that there were some positive plays from the younger players on defense and that special teams did not make major mistakes. But, the Hornets, who only start two seniors, have yet to put together a four quarter game.
That's the difference between a good team and a middle-of-the-road team," Morral said.
But, all things considered, Wellsboro (2-4) played a solid game against Muncy, who only has one loss on the season. This does count as a league loss for Wellsboro as Muncy, along with South Williamsport, joined the NTL this year.
Wellsboro's lone score came on a 65 yard pass from Tim Shaw to Jesse Tom midway through the final quarter. Five plays earlier, Muncy attempted to convert a fourth down and six from the Wellsboro 24-yard line. Muncy quarterback Andrew Bartlow’s pass was broken up by Pat Clark.
After Wellsboro took over on downs, Tom had carries of three and five yards. Shaw, on a keeper got the ball to the 35-yard line.
On the next play, Shaw threw a short pass to Tom, who did the rest of the work. Tom broke several tackles and took the ball all the way to put Wellsboro on the board with 7:04 left in the game. The point after attempt was no good, but Wellsboro avoided the shutout.
The game started with Wellsboro and Muncy trading three-and-out series. On their second drive, the Hornets were able to gain some yardage and converted one of their two first downs of the half. The drive sputtered out after Shaw was sacked for 10 yards on third-and-nine.
The ensuing punt put the ball on the Muncy 32-yard line. Muncy running backs Aaron Messrver and Gregory Balliet did most of the work on the drive and Messner capped it off with a 28 yard run at the three minute mark. The extra point kick was good and Muncy took the early 7-0 lead.
Wellsboro then went three and out before punting the ball to the Muncy 34-yard line.
On Muncy's very first play, Bartlow was nearly intercepted by Cameron Hubbard. Muncy then marched down the field, only to turn it over on downs at the Wellsboro 24-yard line early in the second quarter. Wellsboro, however, again went three and out.
The Indians, starting at their own 46-yard line, took 10 plays to score their second touchdown. David Filer capped the drive wit h a 1-yard touchdown run.
The two squads traded possessions for the rest of the first half, but neither was able to score.
Muncy wrapped up their scoring on the first possession of the third quarter. They put together an eight-play, 52 yard drive that was capped off by a short scoring run by Filer w i th 8:23 left in the quarter. The key t o the drive happened two plays earlier when Messner broke free on a 27 yard run to take the ball to the Wellsboro three-yard line.
Wellsboro would later score their only touchdown. They did have a chance for another score late in the game, but Shaw fumbled the ball around midfield after taking a sack. Three plays later, Muncy's Balliet took the ball 34 yards down lo the Wellsboro three. The game ended as Muncy took a knee with 40 seconds left.
Next up for the Hornets is Troy. The Trojans will tome to town for Wellsboro's Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
