The Towanda Black Knights rang up nearly 450 yards of total offense enroute to a 60-14 win over Wellsboro last Friday night in Towanda.
The Green Hornets, who were without some players due to injury and eligibility, started only two seniors, while Towanda had 17 veterans.
"I give all the credit to them," said Wellsboro head coach Chris Morral, "They are a good football team."
The Black Knights scored the first of their nine touchdowns on the first play from scrimmage as Brad Lantz broke free on a 59 yard run. Lantz would lead Towanda in rushing with 126 yards on eight attempts and two touchdowns. He also recorded a 41 yard touchdown reception in the second half.
Meanwhile, Lantz's teammate Jake Kapson ran for 125 yards and three touchdowns.
The one score by Lantz and two by Kapson allowed Towanda to take a 21-0 lead to start the second quarter.
The Hornets were able to put together a drive, which featured a key fourth down conversion, in the second quarter. Wellsboro finally got on the board as Jake Coolidge took it in from one yard out with 9:14 left in the first half. The extra point kick failed and Wellsboro found themselves in striking distance, but down 21-6.
Towanda responded quickly, scoring three more touchdowns in the quarter. Lantz and Kyle Cook recorded two of the scores on the ground. Cook, the quarterback, was only 2-for-3 passing, but one of those completions was a 41 yard pass to Lantz for the final score of the half.
Cook was also Towanda's third leading rusher on the evening, running for 63 yards on four carries.
The Black Knights took a 41-6 advantage into the locker room and never looked back.
After the half-time break, Towanda scored two more touchdowns on the ground, going into the final frame with a 54-6 lead.
The Hornets were able to add a touchdown on the final quarter on a three yard run by Jake Monks. He would also take credit for Wellsboro's final two points as he caught the pass from Tim Shaw on the conversion attempt.
Towanda, however, was not done. Freshman Charlie Raupers added the final score of the night on a six yard run. The loss drops Wellsboro to 2-2 and 2-1 in league play. Towanda remains undefeated with a 4-0 record and 3-0 in league play. Wellsboro next travels to Wyalusing for a Friday night matchup with the Rams.
"We are pretty evenly matched," said coach Morral of the two teams.
This week the Green Hornets will be searching for a combination that will work on the offensive line to give Shaw and the running backs some protection. Morral also said he expects to have all of his players available for the upcoming game.
